As often happens, the Millay magic continues to stir up wonderful things…
This Fall, three alums (Niva Dorell (Screenwriting, April 2022), Christola Phoenix (Nonfiction, April 2022) and Misa Dayson (Screenwriting, June 2023) joined forces on a new short film “The Lotto Line.” Based on an excerpt from Christola’s memoir Paper Curls and Peanut Earrings, Director/Screenwriter Niva is joined by Producer Misa (who just happens to be Christola’s talented daughter in real life) in this wonderful project.
On a hot summer day in Harlem, 65-year-old Christola is in the lotto line at her corner bodega waiting to place her day’s numbers when she sees a young woman who doesn’t have enough money to buy food. Christola returns to her luxury apartment building without helping her. But the young woman’s desperation haunts her. And triggers her to remember her own experience growing up poor in 1950’s Harlem – a time of trauma, but also stronger community. Christola vows to do better next time. But when she gets another opportunity, will she step off the line?
