Core Residency
Session 1: April-July
Session 2: August-November
Our historic Core Residency, offered to those selected by our blind jury process, is fully-subsidized. If invited to participate, the only fee is a $100 nonrefundable deposit.
The core residency features a creative cohort of 6-7 multidisciplinary artists, selected through our blind jury process, and includes private bedroom and studio (with bedding/linens), shared living spaces, laundry room, workstation, B&W darkroom and use of our Alumni and Nancy Graves Memorial libraries.
Groceries are provided along with communal dinners (prepared by our in-house chef).
As an Artist-in-Residence, it is our hope that your participation as an integral member of a small, supportive and inspirational cohort will forge lifelong friendships as well as professional relationships and future collaborations.
SELECTION
We invite jurors who are practicing professionals as well as alumni; juries generally change between the March and the October deadlines. Therefore, should you plan to apply for both March and October, your work will be seen by different jury memberes.
We use a BLIND jury process — works are judged solely on merit and assigned numbers for clarity — all/any identifying information should be removed from your submission work statement and work sample.
FELLOWSHIPS
We are very proud of our long-standing partnerships with a range of individuals and foundations that ensure a rich diversity for our Core Residency program for multidisciplinary artists.
These opportunities honor our partnerships with various organizations. As funding allows, a stipend to offset expenses related to the residency may be offered.
FACILITIES
Constructed in 1926 by Vincent and her husband Eugene Boissevain from a classic Sears Roebuck kit, the Barn was renovated by Norma Millay Ellis in 1980, thirteen years after she founded the residency. Rustic and beloved by our alumni, the studios allow for intense concentration while the charming bedrooms are cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. The Barn features four bedrooms, four studios, two bathrooms, a small kitchenette and an alumni library.
Completed in 1997 and funded by a grant from the MacArthur Foundation, the Main Building is an early example of universal ADA-design. It houses administrative offices as well as shared living, kitchen and dining spaces, along with a B&W darkroom and workstation (with computer and printer). The Speinson Suite features a large studio, two bedrooms and bathroom, allowing us to welcome artists who are in collaboration and/or those in need of a caregiver during their residency. The McClennan/Hope Suite features a Yamaha U1 upright piano, a bedroom and bath.
The Main Building also has two libraries: the Nancy Graves Memorial Library was donated by the acclaimed sculptor (who, like Vincent, graduated from Vassar College); the Alumni Collection contains publications from past residents.
