June is blooming at Millay! Our fields are flourishing, yes, but so are our residents, upcoming parties, and workshops.
First we want to congratulate Charif Shanahan on receiving the Cave Canem Residency for the second season this year. Recognizing the crucial need to proactively create spaces for African American poets, The Millay Colony has been proud to honor the amazing work Cave Canem does in the world with a dedicated residency for a CC poet every season. Charif is the 8th CC Fellow to receive the Millay residency! He will join us for the month of August and receive a $250 stipend. You can read a poem of his here.
We’re wrapping up another year of our School Programs and already making plans for next year. We worked with Hudson City Schools, Germantown High School, Taconic Hills, and Chatham. We provided Professional Development, in-class writing workshops, artist talks, and artist-led activities. We continue to be inspired by the writers, artists, teachers, and students we encounter.
Please consider making a donation of any size to support this work! But before we start thinking fall, let’s celebrate Summer!
We’re hosting a Solstice Party in NYC at SOLAS on Wed, June 22 at 6 pm. Here is the FB event. Claire Donato and Miranda Mellis will read from their own writing and Melissa Buzzeo will read our palms! Drink specials will be had, conversation will abound, and summer will begin on an auspicious footing. Join us upstairs in the Red bar.
Back upstate at the Colony for the July 4th weekend, alums have a chance to get out of Dodge and stay with us for a few days. Email director@millaycolony.org for more details, please write RAFFLE in the Subject Line.
On Wednesday, July 27th educators can join us for an afternoon Professional Development workshop with Sarah Dohrmann. Reading Visual Art and Music as Text: Reflective Writing Strategies that Connect to the CCLS will take place on our glorious campus. We’re excited to bring Sarah’s expertise and creativity to area teachers.
