VINCENT 2021

A Journal of Art-in-Residence, VINCENT presents works made possible by a Millay Arts residency.

We are always excited to see the creative process of our exceptional alumni made visible, both in the diversity of disciplines as well as the creators themselves.

We are grateful for the efforts of all of our exceptional 2021 alumni especially the 27 who chose to participate, as well as the ongoing partnerships (several spanning decades) with a variety of supporters, who made it possible for us to host 57 multidisciplinary artists in 2021.

Emji Saint Spero, (2018 Poetry alum) outdid their self as not only a stellar editorial assistant (working directly with alums) but also as an outstanding designer. We could not do this without their singular talents and efforts.

It seems fitting to release the Journal this year on the first day of PRIDE, as many of our alumni, including those featured in VINCENT 2021, identify as LGBTQ+.

Always the maverick, in addition to being one of the youngest recipients of the Pulitzer Prize, Edna St. Vincent Millay never apologized for her desire to be called Vincent, her choice of wardrobe (switching between both male and female clothing), her physical attraction to both men and women or her open marriage to Eugen Boissevan. Vincent’s legacy of queerness and acceptance, along with her sister Norma’s creation of the nonprofit residency in her honor remains at the center of what we do.

Did you know we offer an annual fellowship in honor of Vincent’s legacy of queerness and her sister’s visionary founding of the residency? The Vincent Prize is intended for trans*/genderqueer creators, (ideally for those whose gender is nonbinary and/or fluid). To join in this important opportunity and allow us to expand the stipend, contribute now!

We hope you enjoy this year’s VINCENT as much as we imagine both Vincent and Norma’s delight, in this 49th year of Millay Arts welcoming extraordinary creators to Steepletop with the gift of time and space, that allows them to do what they do best: create.
