Sonja Hinrichsen grew up in Germany and graduated from the Academy of Art in Stuttgart in Art Education and received an MFA in New Genres Art from the San Francisco Art Institute. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions worldwide and in numerous artist residencies in the US and abroad.

Sonja’s work addresses our (humankind’s) relationship to nature. Sonja has worked with photography, video installations and has conducted participatory environmental art events. With her large-scale outdoor projects she merges collaborative art-making with sublime nature experience.

More recently she has been working in ceramics. She creates functional ware as well as conceptual installations composed of multiple pieces. She fires in reduction and explores new aesthetic possibilities resulting from atmospheric firing techniques, such as soda and wood.
