Royston Coppenger is an award-winning translator, director, and writer whose work has been produced across the United States and Europe. His translation of Roberto Zucco by French playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès was produced by Cucaracha Theater in New York and Cutting Ball Theater in San Francisco. His translation of Koltès’ In the Loneliness of the Cottonfields was used as the simultaneous translation for Patrice Chereau’s production of the play at The Brooklyn Academy of Music. His new English versions of Hedda Gabler, A Doll House, The Seagull, and Strindberg’s Playing with Fire were produced in New York City by The Private Theater and The Stella Adler Conservatory.
His original works Moses and Hopper were produced by HERE Arts Center in New York City. Professional directing credits include Projeto O’Neill at Teatro a Barraca in Lisbon, Am Anfang war das Teater for Teatro Palino in Baden Switzerland, The Tender Land and Orpheus in the Underworld for Bronx Opera, and The Great White Hope and Fahrenheit 451 for the Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival. His short films Das Kapital: The Movie Chapter 8 and Tonight! have been presented at Oakland International Film Festival, the Pioneer Film Series, and the New Directors series at Anthology Film Archive.
Hofstra directing credits include Troilus and Cressida, Don Juan Comes Back from the War, The White Devil, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, and The War of the Roses, an original adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry VI 1-3. Royston Coppenger holds a DFA in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism from the Yale School of Drama. He is currently Professor of Drama at Hofstra University.
