James Biederman was born in 1947 in New York, NY. He received a BA in 1969 from State University of New York in New Paltz, New York, an MFA in Sculpture in 1973 from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and, in 1971, attended the Whitney Independent Studio Program in New York, New York. Biederman has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including “James Biederman: Sculpture,” Artist Space, New York, New York (1974); “The Virginia Paintings,” Bradford Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia (1999); and at Mattatuck Museum of Art, Waterbury, Connecticut (2016). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including “Recent Acquisitions: Drawings,” Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York (1981); “Peripheral Vision,” Collaborative Concepts, Beacon, New York (2003); and “Embracing Space and Color: Art On and Off the Wall,” Vero Beach Museum of Art, Vero Beach, Florida (2015). Biederman currently lives and works in Wilmington, North Carolina.
