Continuously exploring the myriad intersections of sound, environment, culture, and technology, Iddo’s diverse body of work spans a wide variety of instrumentations, media, and interdisciplinary collaborations, from a fully-staged opera to various experimental projects utilizing live electronics and video. Iddo is currently an Assistant Professor of Music Technology at Colorado College, where he teaches courses on digital and experimental music, songwriting, “environment and sound,” music and social engagement, and multidisciplinary creation. Aharony’s commitment to working toward social and environmental justice is manifested in his teaching as well as in his service as co-artistic director for Chicago-based social activist arts group Fused Muse Ensemble. A native of Tel Aviv, Israel, he received a Ph.D. in Composition from the University of Chicago. Iddo music explores unconventional dialogues between different and often conflicting voices. His electroacoustic work focuses on creating new ways for performers to engage in a fluid real-time interplay with their computer-spawned counterparts. In addition, it examines unpredictable relationships between the visual and the sonic, and the liminal spaces between organic and synthetic sounds. His work most often involves a range of collaborators, from visual artists, poets, filmmakers, and choreographers, to social activists scientists. Aharony’s pieces have been performed by ensembles and musicians in the United States, France, Italy, Argentina, Britain, Spain, The Netherlands, Germany, Israel, and Australia. Among his awards are the 2019 Playground Ensemble annual composition prize and commission, 2014 soundSCAPE festival first composition prize and commission, and fellowships from MacDowell, Ucross Foundation, Blue Mountain Center, and Atlantic Center for the Arts.
