Ess Whiteley (they/them) is a California-based composer, experimental media artist, multi-instrumentalist, and sound artist, working primarily with electronics and in transdisciplinary idioms. They are interested in the post-internet, eco-futurity, spiritual experience, the mutability of the real, and the liminal space existing between the cyberbody and biobody when human beings engage with the virtual. Ess has performed extensively as a multi-instrumentalist and have toured Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States with various projects. Their works have been performed, awarded, and exhibited at conferences and festivals, both national and international. Ess studied at Mannes College of Music Preparatory Division in New York City before completing a Bachelor of Music Degree in Composition and Religious Studies at McGill University in Montréal. Ess is currently a PhD candidate in Composition at the University of California.
